Guide to Choosing the Best Teaching Method

How do you choose an effective teaching method?

Teaching is not a one-size-fits-all profession. Different students have different needs, preferences, and abilities to learn. Therefore, as a teacher, you need to be able to choose the best teaching method for your students that will help them achieve their learning goals and potential. But how do you do that? How do you know which teaching method is the most suitable and effective for your students? Today, I will share the simple guide for choosing the best teaching method for your students that I learned through my experiences, research, and observation. Below are the steps that you need to follow:

Know your students

The first step to choosing the best teaching method for your students is to know them well. Understand their backgrounds, interests, motivations, strengths, weaknesses, and learning styles. You can collect data from primary and secondary sources at the course’s or the term’s beginning. Also, you can do this by interacting with them regularly and getting feedback. Understanding your student’s learning styles can create a more effective learning environment.

Identify your objectives

The second step to choosing the best teaching method for your students is to identify your objectives well. Have clear and specific learning outcomes that you want your students to achieve by the end of the course or the term. Similarly, have clear and specific criteria that you will use to measure and evaluate your student’s progress and performance. Hence, you can align your teaching method with the learning outcomes and assessment methods.

Understand your options

The third step to choosing the best teaching method for your students is understanding your options. Be familiar with the various teaching methods that are available and appropriate for your subject matter and level. Likewise, be aware of the advantages and disadvantages of each teaching method in terms of effectiveness, efficiency, engagement, and enjoyment. So, you can compare and contrast different teaching methods and select the one that best suits your students and your objectives.

Recognize your context

The fourth step to choosing the best teaching method for your students is to recognize your context well. Consider the factors that may affect or limit your teaching methods, such as the time, space, resources, curriculum, policies, and expectations of your institution, colleagues, students, and yourself. Equally important, look at the factors that may enhance or support your teaching methods, such as the technology, materials, activities, strategies, and feedback you can use or provide. Therefore, you can adapt and optimize your teaching method to your situation and environment. For example, if your student is struggling with a concept, provide additional support, such as giving the student extra help after class or providing them with resources.

Do Reflect

The fifth and final step to choosing the best teaching method for your students is to reflect. Assess the effectiveness and impact of your teaching method on your students’ learning and satisfaction. Then, identify and analyze the strengths and weaknesses of your teaching method and make adjustments and improvements. You can learn from your experience and grow as a teacher by reflecting.

To conclude, those are the easy-to-follow steps that I could share with you. Of course, you don’t have to follow them linearly or rigidly. You can use them as a flexible and dynamic guide to help you make informed and thoughtful decisions about your teaching method. The most important thing is to be responsive and respectful to your students and their learning needs. Remember, there is no single best teaching method for all students. The best teaching method for your students is the one that works for them and for you.
