Why Consider the OPPO A73 as Your Next Budget-Friendly Phone

My OPPO A73 Honest Review

Today, we will discuss the OPPO A73 CPH2099 product review. This phone is a mid-range smartphone released in Japan in December 2020. It features a 6.44-inch OLED display with Full HD+ resolution, a quad-camera setup with a 16MP lens and an 8MP ultra-wide lens, a 16MP selfie camera, a Snapdragon 662 processor, 4GB of RAM, 64GB of internal storage, a 4000mAh battery with QuickCharge 3.0 support, and ColorOS 7.2 based on Android 10. This phone comes in two colors: Navy Blue and Dynamic Orange.

The OPPO A73 CPH2099 has strengths and weaknesses that may appeal to different users depending on their preferences and needs. Here are some of the main aspects of the phone that I will discuss in more detail:

  • Design and build quality
  • Display and audio
  • Performance and battery life
  • Camera and video
  • Software and features

Design and build quality

The OPPO A73 CPH2099 has a sleek, lightweight design that measures 159.8 x 72.9 x 7.45 mm and weighs 162 grams. The back of the phone has a leather-like texture that gives it a premium feel and prevents fingerprints and smudges. It also has a transparent silicone case and a pre-applied screen protector for extra protection.

Moreover, this phone has a USB Type-C port, a 3.5mm headphone jack, a speaker grille, a microphone, and a SIM tray on the bottom edge. The SIM tray can accommodate two nano-SIM cards, one nano-SIM card, and one microSD card up to 256GB. The power button is on the right edge, while the volume buttons are on the left. The top edge has another microphone.

The front of the phone has a 6.44-inch OLED display with a waterdrop notch for the selfie camera. The screen display has thin bezels on the sides and the top but a slightly thicker chin at the bottom. Also, this phone has an in-display fingerprint sensor that works fast and reliably.

Display and audio

It has a 6.44-inch OLED display with Full HD+ resolution (2400 x 1080 pixels), which translates to a pixel density of 408 PPI. The screen display has good brightness, contrast, color accuracy, and viewing angles. It also supports HDR10 for enhanced dynamic range and DCI-P3 color gamut for more comprehensive color coverage.

The display has some features that improve the user experience, such as a Sunlight Screen that adjusts the brightness automatically under solid sunlight, a Moonlight Screen that reduces blue light emission at night, a Dark Mode that saves battery life and reduces eye strain, and Always-on Display that shows time, date, notifications, and other information when the screen is off.

In addition, it has a single bottom-firing speaker that produces decent sound quality for its price range. Thus, it can get loud enough for casual listening, but it lacks bass and clarity at high volumes. Besides, it supports Dolby Atmos for surround sound effects when using headphones or external speakers.

Performance and battery life

Also, it has an Adreno 610 GPU for graphics processing. Hence, it can handle basic tasks such as web browsing, social media, messaging, video streaming, and casual gaming smoothly and without lag. However, it may need help with more demanding tasks such as multitasking, heavy gaming, photo editing, or video recording. Surprisingly, it has a 4000mAh battery that can last a full day of moderate usage or up to two days of light on a single charge.

Camera and video

The OPPO A73 CPH2099 has a quad-camera setup on the back that consists:

  • 16MP main camera with f/2.2 aperture;
  • 2MP monochrome camera with f/2.4 aperture;
  • 2MP portrait camera with f/2.4 aperture;

The primary camera can take decent photos in good lighting conditions, with accurate colors, sharp details, and balanced exposure. Nevertheless, it may suffer from noise, blur, or loss of detail in low-light situations or when zooming in.

Also, the ultra-wide camera can capture more scenery in one shot, but it may introduce distortion or chromatic aberration around the edges of the frame. Besides, it has a lower resolution and dynamic range than the primary camera. The monochrome camera can add depth and contrast to black-and-white photos, but it may only be helpful for some users.

In particular, the portrait camera can create a bokeh effect or background blur for portrait shots. Still, it may not accurately or consistently detect edges or separate the foreground from the background.

Moreover, this phone has a 16MP selfie camera with f/2.2 aperture on the front that can take good selfies in daylight or indoors with sufficient lighting. It also has an AI Beauty mode that can enhance facial features or smooth skin according to user preference. Also, it supports electronic image stabilization (EIS) that can reduce shaky footage to some extent.

Furthermore, it has some camera modes that can enhance the photography experience, such as:

  • Photo. The default mode allows users to adjust settings such as flash, HDR, timer, filters, aspect ratio, etc.
  • Video. It allows users to record videos with options such as Flash, EIS, filters, etc.
  • Expert. The mode will enable users to manually adjust settings such as ISO, shutter speed, white balance,
  • Focus mode, etc.
  • Panorama. This mode lets users capture wide-angle photos by moving the phone horizontally or vertically.
  • Portrait. This phone allows users to take portrait shots with a bokeh effect using either the rear or front cameras.
  • Time-lapse. This mode will enable users to record videos at accelerated speed by capturing frames at longer intervals.
  • Slow-motion. It reduced the rate by capturing frames at shorter intervals.
  • Google Lens. Using Google’s image recognition technology, the mode lets users identify objects or information.

Software and features

The OPPO A73 CPH2099 runs on ColorOS 7.2, based on the Android 10 operating system. ColorOS is OPPO’s custom skin that adds some features and modifications to the stock Android interface. Some of the features of ColorOS include:

  • Smart Sidebar. A floating toolbar can be accessed by swiping from the right edge of the screen. It provides shortcuts to apps or functions such as screenshots, screen recording, split-screen, calculator, etc.
  • App Cloner. With this phone, you can duplicate versions of apps such as WhatsApp, Facebook, or Instagram to use multiple accounts on one device.
  • Game Space. It optimizes the performance, battery, and network for gaming sessions. Also, it blocks notifications, calls, or messages during gameplay.
  • Smart Assistant. The phone’s feature provides information or shortcuts on the leftmost home screen panel. Moreover, it includes widgets such as weather, calendar, steps, quick functions, etc.
  • Gesture Navigation. This replaces the traditional navigation buttons with swipe gestures from the bottom or sides of the screen. It allows users to go back home or switch apps more easily.
  • Dark Mode. It changes the system theme to dark colors and supports third-party apps such as Instagram, Twitter, or YouTube.
  • Privacy Protection. Another feature of the phone is protecting user data from unauthorized access or leakage. Also, it includes options such as app lock, private safe, personal information protection, payment protection, etc.
